An important decision -was given by justice Cooper, in a case in which the police moved to have the license of Edward Swann of Hikurangi Hotel and License, of William Edwin McCrutcheon of Poroti Hotel, quashed, mainly on the ground that the licensees wero removed outside of tho limits provided by the Act. The question was whether the respective committees had jurisdiction to grant publican’s licenses to Swann .and McCrutheon. Hia Hionor ruled they had not and: ordered the issue of a writ to quash both licenses. STRIKE AT WATHI. WAHI, This Day. Members of the local branch pf tho Amalgamated Society of Engineers having been unable to come to terms with with mining companies in connection with the dispute over wages and hour clauses, as set out in the recent award, came out on strike at noon to-day. At present only about fifty men are involved, hut unless a settlement can bo reach c-d at an early date, the position will become serious and far-reaching. A conference with the heads of tho mining company was held yesterday afternoon after a stop work meeting, and in tho evening the men notified the company that unless tho demands wore acceded to, tho men would cease work to-day.
