At the inquest concerning the death jof Miss Alice Pitt, a visitor from Christchurch who was found dead in bed on Wednesday morning, a verdict was returned that deceased was suffocating while in.a fit. A FATAL INJURY. DUNEDIN, May 23. George Joyce, 15 years of age, residing nt Gavcrsham, and employed at Ross and Glending’s factory, was fatallv injured to-day by being crushed in a lift. TRADE EST SAMOA.. AUCKLAND, This Day. Mr Dalton, Imperial Trade Commissioner, who recently visited the Tonga group and Samoa says since war there has been a deal of foreign competition there, even in soft goods, largely owing to America and Japan. He believes a considerable development of British trade in Samoa is likely. Tho possibilities of production are very groat. LICENSING DECISION. AUCKLAND. This. Day. An important decision -was given by justice Cooper, in a case in which the police moved to have the license of Edward Swann of Hikurangi Hotel and License, of William Edwin McCrutcheon of Poroti Hotel, quashed, mainly on the ground that the licensees wero removed outside of tho limits provided by the Act. The question was whether the respective committees had jurisdiction to grant publican’s licenses to Swann .and McCrutheon. Hia Hionor ruled they had not and: ordered the issue of a writ to quash both licenses. STRIKE AT WATHI. WAHI, This Day. Members of the local branch pf tho Amalgamated Society of Engineers having been unable to come to terms with with mining companies in connection with the dispute over wages and hour clauses, as set out in the recent award, came out on strike at noon to-day. At present only about fifty men are involved, hut unless a settlement can bo reach c-d at an early date, the position will become serious and far-reaching. A conference with the heads of tho mining company was held yesterday afternoon after a stop work meeting, and in tho evening the men notified the company that unless tho demands wore acceded to, tho men would cease work to-day.
