A THRILLING FEAT.
A GALLANT RESCUE. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. COPTBIOHT.] (Received This Day nt 1.20 a.m.) NEW YORK, May 27. The Navy Department relates a thrilling narrative of the rescue from seaand flam A of the survivors of the Florence, which was destroyed by an explosion in a French port on the 17th April. After the explosion, the surrounding water was covered with a mass of boxes of smokeless powder, which were constantly exploding. Ihe survivors clung to the wreckage but could not reach the small boats owing to their being jammed by the wreckage. The lifeboats were ablaze, and a motor boat was jammed and enveloped with flame, when Haislip, commander of an American destroyer, despite the danger of the explosions and tho terrific heat from the burning vessel, drove it through tho flaming wreckage rescuing thirty-four, who (otherwise wore doomed. The rescuers have been recommended for medals.
