COLONEL’S SACRIFICE.
FACED CERTAIN DEATH
London, May S
The “ Gazette ” notifies the award of six Victoria Crosses, of which the following is typical.
The late Lieut-Colonel M. C. Watson, D. 5.0., of the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, for most conspicuous gallantry, self-sacri-ficing devotion to duty, and exceptionally gallant leading during a critical period. When the enemy was continually attacking, trying to pierce into our line, Colonel Watson led his remaining small reserve to the attack, under constant rifle and machinegun fire. He organised bombing parties, and led the attacks under intense fire. Being outnumbered finally he ordered the retirement, remaining himself to cover the retirement, facing almost certain death. ‘ The assault Colonel Watson led saved the line, but he was killed covering the withdrawal.
