CANADA AND THE WAR.
Vancouver, May 1 i
. A message from Ottawa says that Sir Robert Borden (the Premier) today replied with startling frankness to the. farmers’ appeal agaiimt the calling up of men from 19 to 22 years of age. He said:—“lf a scattered and broken, remnant which is overwhelmed because it is not reinforced should return to Canada, it would profit little to tell them that while they were being decimated our production has largely increased.” The Canadian Government agents have begun a systematic search of the Western Canadian farms • for 20,000,000 bushels of wheat reported to be held by the farmers. With the completion of seeding, the officials say the farmer must give up all surplus wheat held. They suspect that wealthy Russian and German farmers in Saskatchewan are withholding considerable wheat.
