LATE LOCALS.
The Success dredge washed up to-day for a return of 40 ozs for 102 hours work. Hon. J. Grimmond, who was in town yesterday paid an inspection visit to the South Spit, Kanieri, and Hokitika State schools in connection with repairs being carried out by the Canterbury Education Board. To-day Mr. Grimmond has gone to Barrytown to enquire, along with Mr. Bignell, into a disputed matter between the teacher and a parent arising out of the expulsion of a pupil. There was a good attendance at St. Mary’s Club usual weekly euchre tournament last, night. About 15 tables were occupied. The ladies first - prize (a tin of biscuits) went to Miss Iv. Murphy and the gents (a set of silver sleeve links) to Mr Eatwell. Supper was then handed round and dancing was resumed until mid-night. Mr Eatwell very kindly donated bis prize back to the Club. The dance music was excellently supplied by Misses Breeze and Air. A. Lawn. The management of the floor was in the capable hands of Mr T. Heenan. The points gained at last night’s tournament will count for the aggregate prize at the close of the season. - Mr Gooch’s motor service - between Hokitika and Jackson continues to increase in popular favor, and is filling j evidently a much felt want. The mail j service is a great convenience to business people and .others on Tuesday and , Thursday evenings, while tlie growing passenger service indicates how much j the public appreciate the ready means | of saving time in reaching Hokitika] hours in advance of the train service. The outward Saturday- service is also much in use now, and it will he a greater convenience still when a regulai mail service is despatched by this means also. A public meeting was bold at the Kokatahi Hall last evening to protest against a steam waggon being allowed on the Kokatahi road for the haulage of timber. There was a representative attendance and an unanimous opinion expressed in opposition to the County Council in granting leave withj out imposing any safe-guards lor oruinj ary horse traffic. It was resolved to I petition the Council at once on the matter, and a document is now being signed for presentation to the County Chairman next week. Mr Norman’s action at tlio Council table was endorsed by the public meeting and it, was resalved to ask Mr. Norman to reconsider \ liis intention of resigning from the County Council, but Mr. Norman was not much disposed to accede to the suggestion i
