HONORING THE BRAVE.
, MASTERTON, May 7th. j At the Clareville Hall this evening a| gathering took place to do honour to 17 young men from the Clareville district who have laid down their lives for their country. The hall was well filled for the occasion, amongst those present being the Hon. IV. D. S. MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture Sir Walter Buchanan, M.L.C., Mr J. T. M. Hornsby, member for the district, Mr. Sykes M.P. for Masterton. Mr and Mrs W. P. Allen, who have been very active in connection with the erection of the hall, and who have been unwearied in their efforts • for the promotion of the social well-being of the district, had presented portraits of the 17 soldiers to he hung in the hall. The Hon. Mr MacDonald performed the unveiling ceremony, and in the course of a stirring speech paid tributes to the gallant men who had fought and died for their country. Sir Walter Buchanan and Mr Hornsby also spoke in a similar strain. During the evening a number of musical items were' excellently given, and a vote of thanks was passed to Mr and Mrs Allen for their lifelong services on behalf of the community in which they they hgd spent so many -years.''
