RETURNING SOLDIERS.

526 ARRIVE AT AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND May y. A vessel conveying 526 soldiers under Lieut.-Colonel R. C. Allen arrived this evening. The men will not land until the morning. The southern men will leave by special train to-morrow.

A PLEASANT VOYAGE.

AUCKLAND, This. Day. Transport No 159 had a pleasanfj voyage except for the death of a woman passenger. Almost all the soldiers .weto talking teases. Many received their wounds at Passchendaele, some in Massines and other engagements. There did not appear to be many crippled men but the majority bore marks of active service.

The Minister of Dofenco and local officials visited the vessel after it was cleared and gave a general welcome to the draft. The work of the Medical Board commenced soon after 6 p.m., and was completed nt an early hour this morning. Apart from the -slight preliminary delay, the arrangements were quite satisfactory. The transport was berthed, at eight this morning and the tr ( oops disembarked^. A largo number of Main Body men who gained commissions and honours are included in the draft. \ /■ V “

Sir James Allen stated that no great difficulty was being-experienced in securing the additional number of men required by the Imperial Government. Unless circumstances involved an al. teration of the plans, Class B. men, who are now being medically examined, will probably be going into camp when the reinforcements fall back to their strength-prior to the recent request for an increase.

WANGANUI, May 7

Daphne Mary Church, aged 19, was killed to-day. at Waverjey through falling out of a dray. Her father is a returned soldier and is believed to be in the Auckland district.
