TONGA’S NEEDS.
(Recowed This Dav at 12.25. p.m.) SYDNEY, May 7.
Tho Premier of Tonga said it was partly owing to New Zealand’s proximity," and partly to the laxity, or indifference of Australia, that New Zealand had been able to secure Tonga’s trade. The indifference of Australia had forced the Tongan Government to , subsidise the Union Company, by grant i ing them free harbour pdotago and ) wharfage to the extent of £4,000 per annum. Tonga’s preference for trade with Australia was because unions existed for manufacturing oil in New Zealand, from copra which was Tonga’s largest export, whereas there was the means to manufacture oil in Australia. Last year Tonga was forced to send seven thousand tons of copra to America and this year he anticipated fifteen thousand tons would go there. Those facts spoke for themselves. He j asked why does Australia ignore us P We would rather trade with her than any other country.
