Franro-British troops are lighting brilliantly side by side. The British apparently hold Villers-Bretonneux.
FRENCH HEROES,
A SPLENDID STAND
LONDON, April 213. The United Press correspondent in a later report describes what he terms the tempestuous struggle for Kemmel Hill. The French heroes on the crest raked the slopes with machine-gun fire. Another French unit held Kemmel village with equal tenacity. At the same time from the slopes of the neighbouring hills, namely Scherpenberg, Mont Rouge, Mont Vidache and Mont Voir, the French were pouring in machine-gun fire. Their batteries were raking the middle slopes of Mont Kemmel, and French infantry were coun-ter-attacking, all in one whirlpool of battle. The British, on both flanks were enfilading General von Bernhardi’s Alpine Division turning tho green flower-filled valley between Mont Kemmel and the Red and Black Mountains in a sizzling hell. The Germans paid dearly for -their gains. Hardy, specially-picked storm troops charged Kemmel Hill. Attacking fiercely in a north-westerly- course from Wytschaete, they finally wedged between the British and French Flanks, and crossed the KemmeLYpres Road, where they were held tip for two hours. Then the enemy turned south, and poured down a valley on the westward of KemmeLHill which was finally surrendered, but the French on the crest held out like lions.
The German lines on Friday run westward of Kemmel apparently, but who will be the ultimate'winners is still a matter of doubt.
