PRICE OF BUTTER.
AN IMPORTANT STATEMENT.
MAXIMUM PRICE TO BE GAZETTED SHORTLY.
In the House of Representatives yesterday, Mr J. S. Dickson (Parnell) asked the Prime Minister’ if he would take immediate .action to commandeer sufficient butter from the Auckland factories to supply the retail trade. Mr Massey said that the matter of the supply of butter was being dealt with now by Cabiuet. Legal documents were being drafted by the Solicitor-General in this connection, and as soon as the matters were gazetted things should go on smoothly. If ft was necessary for the Government to intervene this would be done. The Imperial Government had notified the Government that the shipment of butter from New Zealand must cease. This would not seriously aftect the industry in New Zealand, as most of the batter had been shipped aheady. It had been uecessary to keep a sufficient supply for the people. The maximum price for butter would be gazetted in a few days, and the Government would requisition, any. butter that might. -be required.' Mr J. Vigor Brown said that a Napier merchant had sent down to Wellington for butter, but had been refused a supply by the department.
