OTIRA TUNNEL.
A meeting or the executive of the Arthur’s l’ass Tunnel League was held at Christchurch on Wednesday alternoon, the Mayor (Mr H. Holland) presiding over a good attendance. The chairman said he had thought it necessary, in view of the Minister’s reply to the deputation, to call the executive together to see what further could be done, and to determine whether the committees should be authorised to spend funds in propaganda work.
Discussion ensued on the reply of the Minister ot Public Works to the deputation to the effect that if the League could find workers he would put them on, audit was suggested that the League might do something in the way of attempting to line! men.
ATi' Cyrus Williams asked if there was not involved a question as to the wages bo paid. The chairman said that the Minister had promised ‘ to investigate matters connected with wages. Mr H. J. Marriner suggested that the executive might consider making a recommendation as to the payment of a bonus or of higher wages.
Mr Wm Reece asked if it would not be better to wait until the Minister had made his investigation at the end of the present session of Parliament, and then go into matters. That, would be, he added, safer than interfering at present. Mr Reece’s suggestion was adopted and it was also agreed that in the meantime the Committees should not incur any expenditure. The Deputations Committee ( was instructed to arrange for representatives of the League waiting oh the Minister on his return from the Coast to ascertain details of bis investigation.
