HUN TRICKS IN ITALY

If you take a firm, hard walnut and try to crush it with both hands- you will probably fail. But if-with a needle you conld in ject a germ through the end which joins the stem so that the inside would begin to rot, you could in time crush the shell with the thumb and forefinger. Among all her enemies Germany has been working upon this principle, and will continue so to work. We

should not condemn this correct war policy on her part, but we must mercilessly blame ourselves if wo let her succeed. We must be in a position to recognise every subtle attempt and to frustrate it immediately.

I witnessed the Italians in the front line on the Piave a few days ago refuse the proffered cup qf delicious and innocent-looking poison in the only effective way. Because the interim' rot had spread two months ago to a comparatively few Italian troops, who believed enemy blandishments and- swallowed the poison, their country men arc now fighting with their backs to Venice instead of Gorizia.

Happily, the Italian troops have gained, a clear insight into enemy methods by the costly lesson. Consequently when the Austrians, fairly bubbling with friendliness —“ according to plan ” —ushered in Christmas morning with placarded good wishes for their “ beloved brothers ” across the way, the latter riddled the placards with something even more effective than ridicule, while “ Viva I ’ Italia! ” rang down the trench and into the next trench until it resounded aloDg the whole Piave line from the lagoons to the mountains. In some places the Austrians openly suggested fraternisation and even went to the extent of describing Russia as a glorious example of a country that had thrown olf the chains of its rulers.

show himself sp seductively peaceful thhtr he would not indulge in the easiest attempts at sniping, with the result that we£ould gaze nonchalantly over the parapet on the river edge across- the swirling greenish-brown waters at the neighbourly trench beyond. Fritz had been preparing more than friendly greetings, however, for, in the late afternoon, realising that his peace offensive had broken down, he cut loose with a violent shelling of the very positions to which he had been offering soothiDg syrup.

Enemy propaganda has assumed a rather weird form recently in Italy. Almost every day some preposterously joyful story is lannched in onr midst, apparently taking root in a number of widely separated places at the same time. The civil population and the troops suddenly learn, for example, that a successful naval dash has been made on Trieste and an army landed. Hope beats high, the official reports say nothing, cold disillusionment comes, and the pendulum swings back. One of the most successful “fakes” of this type was that Haig had smashed the German lines near Cambrai, taken the city and eighty thousand prisoners. This was so well spread that it received surprising credence.

By "way of variation the opposite kind of story was started among the British troops here. Yon can imagine the disturbed state of mind of Thomas Atkins, while not yet accustomed to an entirely new terrain, to learn on every hand that after a heavy air raid on London the people had risen in rage against the Government, overturned them, and for the moment the British capital was as chaotic as Petrograd !

Taken in themselves these are little things, but added together in thousands they made a very big thing. We must keep on the alert everywhere for new tricks by the enemy. Not to do so would be criminal negligence in this critical period ot the ivar.
