ITe leaves a widow and grown up family. One son is on active service and another returned wounded to New Zealand.

|The fFown Band made a welcome appearance in the streets on Saturday •night and played an excellent programme.- The Band was also present at the Three Mile Sports yesterday. A cable message advises that Lieut.. A. H. W. Evenden, eldest son of Constable T. A. Evenden, of Rimu, who left with the 10th Reinforcements, had been promoted fo the rank of Captain as from Ist January last.

The Rimu Sports take place to-mor-row, and should "attract a good attendance. There are excellent nominations for the various events and the contests promise to be keen ones. Special coaches will leave, town during tho morning for Rimu. A danco will be Held in the evening.

A meeting of the Otira Workers’ Union was held on Thursday evening, when the men decided to return to work and await tho Minister’s visit at the close of the. session of Parliament, when enquiry is to be made into any grievance the men may have to put forward.

The deceased who was a native of Shetland Isles and 76 years of age, had been 54 years in New Zealand, and of these 41 years had been spent in Kumara district, where he followed a mining occupation. He was well and favourably known throughout the district. He leaves a widow . to mourn his loss, and Mr. R. Goudie is a brother-in-law.
