Fortunately no one was injured, ami very little damage was done. It, appears that a man named Knott, who does odd jobs about the waterfront, was engaged m cleaning out the bilges abaft the engine-room, when a naked light width he was carrying ignited some fumes caused through the leakage of benzine cargo. A violent, explosion resulted, which hurled the hatches of the larger after-hold up into the air. Knott was knocked backwards, but received no The exnlosion did not affect, the 250 cases of benzine stowed in. tlve hold, The vessel had on board a total of 2016 cases of that spirit. It is, therefore, considered that a disastrous explosion was narrowly averted. The fire brigade arrived promptly on the scene, but. as no fire occurred their services were not required. The only damage that, resulted was the shattering of one of the three hatches that were lying lightly over the hold. As the Huia was at No. U berth, close in the jwhnrf entrance, the explosion attracted a crowd. Within recent times explosions of case oil fumes have occurred on fhe Arahnra at Gisborne, the Kalin at Napier. the Aloa at sea (off AVangamn), the Breeze at AVellington, the To Anna at, Napier, an Anchor Company’s steamer at Nelson, and a big schooner at Lyttelton. The officials of the AVellington Waterside Workers’ Union protest strongly against the use of naked lights under such circumstances as those which caused yesterday’s explosion. Clause 16 of the new agreement with the employers particularly prohibits such risks being taken.
