NEW ZEALAND INSURANCE CO

AUCKLAND. Feb. 5

The balance-sheet of the New Zealand Insurance Company for the year ended November 30th, 1917, shows that the net income from premiums, interest and rents was £1,207,119. The available balance on the year’s transactions, including balance brought forward from the previous year, amounts to £100,174 from which is deducted the dividend of £26,250 paid in August last. The directors recommend placing £60,000 to the reserve fund. From the balance of £73,924 they recommend ttie payment of a dividend at the' rate of 4s a share

and a bonus of 6d per share, absorbing £33,750 and making 8s per share for the year; leaving a net balance of £lO, 174 to be carried forward. Tile paidup capital, reserves and individual profit amount to £1,360.174 after providing for the dividend recommended.

A SERIOUS OUTLOOK

WELLINGTON, Feb 8

The Minister of Public Health made a statement to-day regarding steps that will have to be taken by his Department to deal with the large number of cases of tubercular disease which are found to occur among returned soldiers. Tlie report from the Public Health Department said the Hon. Mr. Russell shows that up to Man. 31st 13,623 soldiers had returned to New Zealand the number of phthisis eases among these men which bad developed after the arrival of the men in New Zealand was 593. Of these 492 bad developed the disease before their return.

There had been 42 deaths from tubercular' diseases.

At present there are under treatment 148 of these men. It is evident that a considerable increase will have to be provider for soldiers.
