Cooper of Rimu lias been advised that her son Sapper John Cooper was admitted to Hospital in France on 2St.li January, suffering from pneumonia severe. i There will not be any display, of Pollard’s Pictures this evening. In order to permit the second, production of ‘‘Tlio Gondoliers” to-night, Mr Pollard is kindly placing the Princess Theatre at the disposal of the Patriotic Committee. -
The latest voluntary enlistments of youths, 20 years of age for the reinforce monts include William Jack Hewer, li’erepo; George Perciyal Harris, Knmara; and Oscar Gibson Bird-of Ruatapu. Those who pass the medical test will go to camp with the 39th Reinforcements concentrating on May Ist.
This week the Westland Racing Club despatched to Mr 11. Whitney a gold medal suitably inscribed to• mark ' tlu* West Coast record put up by Rose Pink in the mile and a quarter handicap race on the opening day of the midsummer meeting of the Club. Mr Whitney had written the Club earlier stating it would give him great pleasure to accept the trophy, and lie hoped next season to attend the Chib’s meeting in person. .
During the past few days some of our invalided soldiers have returned from the front. These young men with their relatives have been invited to the Overseas Club at 3 o’clock, tomorrow afternoon, when the Mayor; behalf of the citizens will extend a welcome home. All returned men who eft make it convenient to attend, are desired also to ho present in giving their comrades as hearty a welcome as possible. The ladies of the Overseas Club will oblige by forwarding a plate.
The Lady Liverpool Committee have on sale a number of conies of “The Camp Record,” giving interesting particulars of the Featherston military camp. The prices are *2/6, 3/6 and o/aceording to binding, and the proceeds go towards a memorial erected at Featherston to the men who die in camp. T|he publication is excellently produced and is full of interesting particulars of camp life and routine, and is well illustrated. Copies may be bad through Mrs Butler or any member of the Liver pool Committee.
A verv sudden death took place yesterday, when Air Carson, who only arrived in Greymoiith on the 31st of January to relievt* Mr Haskins, who has retired from the Engineers’ department of the New Zealand Railways, passed away just after partaking of a plate of soup at lunch time at Rewa Hospital. The deceased contracted a severe cold just after his arrival at Greymoiith, and had to seek medical aid. He did not make the progress looked lor, and entered yjewa Hospital where he seemed to be progressing. Death seems to have been due to heart trouble accompanied b.v
