WESTPORT FATALITY.
A SEAMAN DROWNED. WESTPORT, , Jan. 28.Tames Dick Hastio, an able-bodied seaman on the s.s Ivini, was drowned in the Boiler River on Saturday afternoon. It appeal's that deceased asked ioi leave for a few hours and this request was granted .About 5 p.m., the chief officer (Mr. T. Bowling) was standing on the deck of the Ivini, when he saw the deceased -man coming down the wharf apparently in an intoxicated condition. He stepped on to the gangway and fell against the rope on the right side and then fell over the gangway. Mr. Bowling went to the spot and saw deceased in the water. Mr. Bowling got on to a stringer to assistance, hut Hastie disappeared ami did not come up again. Mr. Bowling could not-say whether deceased fell into the net or not. When the net" was placed under the gangway, it appeared to be all right, and was propcily secured. After deceased fell, Mr. Bowling examined the not and discover ed that a, strand near the end was broken.,.----The police' were notified of the accident and had dragging operations put under wav immediately and the body was recovered by Mr. J. Freeman. Captain Tointon and Oon’stable Allen at 2.35 a.m. yesterday. His mother iesides at Hackthorne Road, Cashmere, Cli rist church.
