FLY AND WEED EXTERMINATOR.
A representative of Wheelband’s Ltd. of Christchurch, is at present in Hokitikka, his business being “death to the fly,”—the carrier of disease —tc the blackberry and to weeds of all descriptions. - The experiment carried out at. Greymouth under the supervision of the Municipal authorities was a great success. The Greymouth Evening “Star” reported on Saturday: “This morning a demonstration of the efficacy of Wheelbnnd’s fly exterminator was given in the rear of Greanev’s blacksmith’s shop. It is well known that the common fly is the most prolific source for the dissemination of disease, and as the fertility of the fly is prodigious, it is evident that some means of eradicating the pest must be obtained. Tt is said that a fly lays 160 eggs and these .hatch and come to maturity -in eight days. One female fly lays six billion eggs per annum.
“In the experiment this morning a heap of manure was divided into two heaps. One as lightly sprayed with the exterminator and the other left untouched. A few flours afterwards hot! heaps wore closely examined. The one that was sprayed did not contain a single larva, but the unsprayed heap was a living mass. “In ufther ■centres, the value o« Wheelbnnd’s' exterminator has been acknowledgde by the authorities, and in Wellington it is compulsory to spray all garbage and rubbish heaps twice a week.
“This otfernoon, a demonstration of Wheolband’s noxious weed killer was given under the supervision of the Borough Engineer and the Inspector oi Nuisances, and a number of blackberry hushes were, treated. The site was the corner of Leonard and Boundary streets. The results of the experiment will he seen in a week', time on the surrounding herbage, hut the blackberry will take a longer t-ime. “Both demonstrations have aroused considerable public interest, and all speak highly of the merits of Wheelband’s preparations. W. Jeffries and Co have been appointed agents for both specifics, for Hokitika and district.
