Westland Advisory Committee of the National Efficiency Board will sit at Hokitika on Friday forenoon next as will also the Executive' of the Westland Patriotic fund on the afternoon of the same day. The manager of the Greymouth abattoir reported that the following stock had been deal for the month of 'Decem-ber:—-Bullocks 113, sheep 474, lambs 309, pigs 6, calves 18. No ( carcases were condemned during the month. I Private F. Doran killed in action in Franco was a native of Capleston, and before leaving fbr active service* eighteen months ago was employed I working in the quartz mines. Mr. Doran (father) died only last week. Another brother (John) is on active service. The arrangements are well forward for the visit to Otira tunnel works next week. Parties from Hokitika and Greymouth go forward by Tuesday morning’s train and _will meet the Canterbury party at Arthur’s Pass. Mr Dinnie, the Engineer in charge of the works is making the arrangements for the inspection, and it should be of an interesting nature. The exploration of the tunnel at the Bealev end will take about two hours, and at the Otira end, from three to ’four hours. The meeting of the East and West Coasters will also afford an opportunity for a mutual discussion oir matters relating to the' speedy completion of the work. /

They hail from all parts of the district ranging from Oleum to Knmara. The usual form of farewell will he varied as on the evening preceding departure the opera. “The Gondoliers” will he presented at the Pi ineess Theatre 'for the benefit of the Westland Patriotic Fund. Instead, the men will be invited to the Overseas Club in the afternoon and entertained. They will be presented then with the Liverpool parcels, as also, tickets of admission for themselves and a relative • to the operatic performance. During the interval tlio Mayor (Mr \T*erry) will on behalf of the town and district, publicly farewell the men. The presence of fhe men at the entertainment will add to the interest and enthusiasm of the evening’s gathering. Says the Sydney “Shipping List, ,r "of the 11th January:—“lt is reported in shipping circles'that the Holyman line of steamers will be augmented at an early date by the Karamu, a steamer of 934 tons, owned by the Union Steam Ship Company, and at present engaged on the New Zealand coast.” >
The following changes in the Union Steam Ship Company’s service are notified by Press Association telegram from Dunedin: —Mr. D. Carter, of Greymouth has been appointed manager at Fiji, in succession to MJ. Eva. Mr. P. N. Jeffries, branch manager at New Plymouth, has been appointed to Greymouth, and Mr. D. Morrison, submanager at Rarotonga, goes to Plymouth.
In addition to the very attractive programme,' published in another column, there will be a decorated hat competition, the prize for which has been kindly given by a lady visitor, at the Floral Fete on Wednesday next. The decoration —done at home—will be natural flowers and foliage. Quite a number of present and future housewives are exhibiting in the cooking classes, and the Poster events promise some interesting novelties. The display of trophies in Mr. R. Preston’s windows .is; evidence that, prize winners are to he well entered for.
At the Greymoutb Chamber of Commerce the Chairman (Mr Campbell) said he was not adverse to the tunnel scheme, but this was not a time when the Government should be asked to carry .on ! any 'work that called for a considerable number of me n They could better be employed in the essential * industries. Messrs Kettle, McLean and Lynch expressed the view that the work should be carried on with all possible speed. After a lengthy discussion Mr Kettle moved that the Mayor .Messrs McLean, Smith, Parfitt, and Kettle represent this Chamber to confer with the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce at Otirn on 29th. inst. The motion was seconded ov Mr W. Parfitt and carried. Messrs Campbell and Callwell voting “No.”
Purely through a misunderstanding four young ladies had quite an adventure. at Castleeliff at Wanganui Heads. They arranged w'ith a lady to take her furnished house at “the beach” over the holidays, and set out with instructions thst“it was a few doors past, somebody’s store. They located a nice little beach bungalow and were delighted with the place, which was nicely furnished, including the telephone. In the larder was discovered cake and lemonade, and so a recherche supper was held. On the following evening some friends were invited down to supper, and tW remarks on the new home were decidedly complimentary The telephone would not work, and this fact, was casually mentioned the following day to the “owner.'’ “But. there is, no telephone in niv house,” said the lady somewat- bewildered. It 'was not long before the fact was established that the quartet had fn error taken possession of the wnfcnanted seaside resort of a. well-known local solicitor.
