THE CRISIS IN AUSTRIA
WORKERS DISREGARD LONDON January 22. : The “Daily Ohrorfidle’s” Amsterdam correspondents latest report from Vienna describes the situation as one of increasing seriousness and indicates that the worker’s are disrfgarding their leader’s advice. If the report- of Scidler’s resignation is confirmed it is clear that, the Government’s assurances have not cleareu - the situation. The “Daily News” Rotterdam correspondent states that- Austria Hungary is fast hurrying to a crisis. Large masses of the population are in a states of incipient revolt against the Germanic domliiii'.'bioii. They believe that the dictation of the German annexationists at Brest Litovsk defeated the chances of peace. SPREAD OF STRIKE. COLLISION WITH POLICE. 'AUSTRALIAN & N.Z. CABLE ASSOCIATION] AMSTERDAM January 22, x Despite the severest censorship it is evident that the. strike is spreading, in practically all industries. Lower Austria is now affected. The figures regarding the number of strikers are excised, though occasionally censor’s oversights suggest that 10% of the people are now striking, including the workers in the most essential war industries. Eight thousand strike leaders have met at Vienna to formulate plans. Violent collisions have taken place between strikers and the police, especially at Rjngplatz and Opernplatz. There is much, looting of food stores and many arrests. . Anti-German bitterness is growing.

A Vienna, message states Emperor Karl refused Seidler’s and Weekeleir’s resignation, commanding them to retain their Ministeries to aced© to the popular demands regarding food extension of commercial franchise and woman’s suffrage, and civil control of industry. Seidjer further announced that Government aimed at a speedy general peace without annexations, permitting Poland to settle their own relationships with Austria. THE STRIKE ENDS. The Arbitter Zeitung in a remarkable article said patience of the tortured masses is ended. They are unable to endure any longer.- Not outworkers hut millions of peasants, officials and professionals demand peace. The strikers are now translating their power into definite acts. It- is strange that the Austrian censor allowed the article to be published. The German newspapers are ignoring the Austrian crisis.

A well-informed traveller from Austria says that every Austrian ridicules the idea of fighting on for Alsace-Lor-raine, Germany’s annexations of Belgium, freedom of the seas, and other items in the German jingoes’ pro-, gramme. Austria wants an Austrian peace, and an overwhelming mass of the people support the right of self-determination by occupied territories. If Germany does not want peace Austria does, but will she be offered it?
