Marshal Haig reports that as a result of local fighting on the Canal >du Nord, reported earlier, four of our advanced posts were pressed hack a short distance. and a few men are missing. THE GERMAN REPORT. LONDON, Jan. 4th. Wireless German official.—English attacks eastward of Ypres, and northward of the La Bassee Canal broke down. The enemy lost twenty-three aeroplanes since Jan. General Haig reports the enemy made a strong loeal attack against positions on the Hindenburg line, eastwards of Bulleedurt. A small party occupied a sap before the front trench. The enemy were repulsed on the remainder front, before reaching the positions. Hostile artillery were active northeast of Ypres. Our aeroplanes on Friday dropped 250 bombs on Denain Led eg, Menin, and Roulers rail stations.
Air fighting was _inostly confined to the Northorn»portion of the front, where we brought down eight and drove down two. Five of ours are missing. We bombed last night the factories and railway communications and other targets of military importance at. Mainzier-le-Motz. All our s returned. A SAP RECAPTIIED. I.ONDON January G. General Haig reports eastward of Bel leeourt ,we recaptured a sap which the enemy had occupied yesterday morning.
