S.S NGAHERE
STRIKES A ROCK. NO MATERIAL DAMAGE. [PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPYRIGHT.] WELLINGTON, This Day. The Blackball Coal Company’s collier Ngahere while bound from Greymouth to Wellington grounded lightly on Satur day night in a thick fog off Sinclair Head The vessel was steaming dead slow, Captain Dillner endeavouring to pick up Pencarrow Light. He saw a light which he believed to be Pencarrow and steered accordingly but. kept the speed dead slow . A few minutes later rocks were seen ahead which were recognised as being off Sinclair’s Head. While backing out the ship touched a rock aft, but as she made no water the Captain stood out and the vessel renehed port without further incident. The lights which the ship’s officers mistook for Pencarrow was a fixed one on a hill near Sinclair Head. ’ The vessel will be examined for damage, which is n°t apparent now. ■Shipmaster’s urge that 'the accident emphasises the need of an occult, ing light, at Pencarrow.
