OKURITO RACES.
(From a Correspondent.) Okartto, Dec 26,
The Okarito races took place today. The weather was all that could be desired, a fair crowd assembled, and the sport was good, although as I suppose in other parts of New Zealand the war had made a mark which caused a feeling which seemed to be felt, and the quietness prevailing with the crowd was noticeable. The results of the races were as follows :
Maiden Race —King Star i, Jewel Pin 2, Speculator 3. Okarito Handicap—Separator 1, The Nut 2, Speculator 3. This race was won easily, the third horse was very late arriving at the winningpost. Wataroa Handicap Southern Star 1, Miss Masterful 2, Robina 3. Delight also ran. This was a splen did race between Southern Star and Miss Masterful and was won by a head.
Waiho Handicap—Moate 1, Separator 2, Speculator 3. A good race was won by half a length, but Separator carried a heavy weight. Southern Handicap—King Star 1, Canna Clieil 2, Everlet 3. The first horse in this race was in good form and won from the start.
Farewell Handicap—The Nut 1, Miss Masterful 2, Everlet 3. There is no doubt but this was tne race.of the day, The Nut winning on the post by about a head. The outstanding feature of the day’s sport was the performance of Mr Maurice Patrick who was both a successful rider and winner. This seemed to be generally appreciated by the public. Good sports do please the South Westland residents at any time, but especially during the annual race meeting.
