WELLINGTON, December 26.

It is likely that owing to the inability of Air. Justice Stringer to leave the work of the Arbitration Court at the present time, another judge will be chosen to become chairman of the Defence Expenditure Commission. The selection of a chairman is now the only point remaining to he settled, and the Commission would have boon in existence already, if Mr. Justice Stringer had been able to leave his present- work for a few weeks.

PROSPEROUS AUCKLAND

AUCKLAND, December 26

After boisterous conditions on Christmas Eve, and dull weather on Christmas Day, Boxing Day was favoured with bright sunshine and a cool breeze, affording ideal conditions for all outdoor recreations. The city is crowded with visitors from the country and southern districts. The attendance at the Cup Meeting was as large as at any previous meeting, and the totalisator handled £O3OO more than last Boxing Day, the total. £80,985, being a record for the Dominion.

SOLDIER P’OUND dead

Stanley Gcrrard, a soldier on final leave from Tauherenikau, was found dead in bed this morning. He complained yesterday of a headache.

' FIRES. WAIHI, Dec. 24th. Two iires occurred at an early hour yesterday mroning. The interior of Walter’s stationery and fancy goods premises was gutted, and practically the whole stock, valued at £2OOO, destroyed. The stock was insured in the State office for £SOO. Effective work by the brigade prevented the destruction of a valuable business block. A lour- roomed house in the east end of the town was totally destroyed, the inmates escaping in their night attire.
