Jain nary, Timaru on 3rd, for Wellington, Westport and Groymoulh with general cargo. While motoring out to Treait-ham Camp 011 Friday afternoon, the. Mayor of Wellington, Mr. .1. P. Luke, C.M.G., had a narrow escape- from serious injury. There wore three, ears to convey the party to the camp, and when passing Kaiwarra a large motor lorry, pile,] high with bundles of pelts, was met. As the ear containing the Mayor and Mayoress passed the- lorry some pelts fell from the top of the, load. They grafted Mr. Luke’s shoulder, and crashed into the car, damaging it materially, and causing some alarm to the lady passengers in the cars. Mr. [Luke was able to proceed to Trentham. A copy of “Blue and White,” the magazine of St. Patrick’s College, Wellington for the year 1917, is to hand. Tt is a remarkably fine publication, containing more than 120 pages of exceedingly readable matter, and magnificently and artistically set out on art paper, and profusely illustrated with first-class photographs and snapshots. In an editorial the editors remark that they have adhered to the policy laid down in the first year of the war that no pains nor expense should ho spared to make the magazine a worthy memorial of thelir dead, and they have more than succeeded in their object. A very large portion of the magazine is devoted to notes concerning those whose names have helped to swell the all too large roll of honour, and to news concerning letters from old boys at the front. A brief biography of and many tributes to the late rector, the Rev. Father Keogh, S. M., various original items of considerable merit and voluminous notes regarding school sports ,and other happenings, help to make up a splendid journal, in which a very high tone is maintained throughout, and which forms the school’s official historic record of the noble answer old boys of the College have made to 1 their country’s call, as well as of their I brave deeds and the distinctions they i have won.
