The usual church services on Christmas Day were attended I>v largo congregations. The Now Zealand Clothing Factory’s new advertisement in this issue gives suitable prices for holiday attire. The Finance Committee (town section) of the Westland County Council meets at 2 o’clock to-morrow afternoon to pass the December accounts for payment.

On Sunday last Mr. and Mrs. James Stapleton of Weld Street, celebrated their golden wedding, and were able to gather most of their family and grandchildren about them. Surprise Packet Day was a great success at Ross yesterday. The demand for tickets was so great that there was a ready sale, and the demand continued unsatisfied. An enthusiastic committee of workers had very complete arrangements made and tihe '.prize distribution was carried out very expeditiously. The ladles’ committee ran gift and sweets stall, and tea. rooms, while a patriotic auction and a picture show brought further grist to the mill. A social wound up the day’s amusement. The n o t result will bp, a substantial addition to tho Westland Sick and wounded fund.

The perfect holiday weather experienced during the past few days has enabled holiday makers to mnke the most of their opportunity a s far as local resorts are concerned,. The limited train service, however, prevented a large number from availing themselves of this usual mode of locomotion, and train traffic suffered as a result. The attendance to the Reef ton races from this end was a case in point, as local patrons would have had to leave on Christmas night and not get back again till this morning. A few sports motored through, but these enthuisast-s were limited in number.

Tlie Christmas season was ushered in in the fine weather and the attendance of the public in the town in the afternoon was of substantial proportions. In the evening, the holiday crowd was not so noticeable and was far short of the number generally in Revell Street on Christmas Eve, six o’clock closing being mainly responsible for the very quiet appearance of the streets. The Town Band icame wit after midnight and played various carols throughout the town not finishing until about six o’clock. Christmas Day was fine and wane and yesterday proved another fine day. The train to Lake Mahinnpua and Ross yesterday morinng was overcrowded with holiday makers, the train accommodation being far from adequate for the occasion

At Stafford on Christmas night, the ladies and gentlemen taking part in tile carol singing had a good reception from the residents, their singing being appreciated. Miss TTampson did good work with her collection box, realising the sum of £4/0/4 which will he forwarded to the Y.M.C.A. A whale about 22 feet long has been washed ashore at the Run Round Ohiro Bay near Wellington. The whale appears to have been dead for some time.

The death of Mrs Ccreseto took place at Reef ton on Saturday, where she had lived since 1872. She leaves a family of three. Sho was a native of Genoa, Italy, and 83 years of ago. The ‘Argus” says the three-figure dividend at the, trots yesterday at Westport is understood to have been in the neighbourhood of two and a half centuries.

Tho inward trains on Christmas Eve were crowded with holiday makers, a large number travelling overland from Christchurch, while the outward trains also carried a good number of passengers.

The Paeroa sailed yesterday morning at So’clock for t-lie excursion to Milford Sound only ten persons taking the opportunity of viewing this beauty spot. The steamer was to call in at Bruce Bay and unload cargo on the way down. The steamer is expected back on New Year’s night. The death, took place at the Grey River Hospital of John Sceterini, who had over a week previously been injured by a gunshot wound. Deceased, who was 50 years of age, and leaves a wife, had been engaged in sawmilling work. His funeral took place at Kumara.

Work on the Otira tunnel is progressing well. On Saturday morning the Hon. W .Fraser ,Minister of Public Works, stated that the work, which is being done from both ends simultaneously, is within 28 or 30 chains of meeting. Of course, some 30 or 40 weeks will yet elapse before it is completed.

A man was admitted, to the Kumara Hospital for treatment on Christmas night suffering from a severe gash* on the side of the head necessitating a member of stitches. A. report states it was caused by a blow by a'member of the fair sex who used a heavy stick with some force. The cause of the attack is not disclosed.

The bushmen’s picnic at Lake Mahinapun drew a very large number to this popular holiday resort the train being packed. A very pleasant day resulted. those present apparently passing a very enjoyable holiday. The Train brought hack a very happy looking gathering in which children and the fair sox predominated to a considerable extent.

With a view to raising further funds for the local Patriotic Society, it is proposed to hold a public meeting tomorrow evening‘at 8 o’clock for the purpose of arranging for a Packet Day at an early date. All willing to assist are requested to attend. The funds oif tho iSociety require replenishing and it is hoped that the district with tusual generosity will give its best assistance. c
