FISH AND FLESH.
GOVERNMENT DISCRIMINATION. WAS THE ORACLE WORKED? (Exchange.) 'Hie General Manager of New Zealand Railways has advised the Secretary of the Westland Racing Club that the Railway Department cannot under any circumstances provide special train facilities for race meetings during the war, which makes the next, paragraph interesting reading. “Whalebone” of the Auckland ‘Star,’ says: “The Railway Department having repeatedly refused the applications of racing clubs for special trains, the following from a Tanranga exchange comes as some surprisei The Public Works Department has arranged, in addition to the ordinary time-table, to run an extra train from Paengaroa on race day. leaving there at 8.50 a.m., and reaching the Mount at 10 o’clock. A train also leaves the Mount at 6 p.m., arriving at Paengaroa at 7.10 p.m. Tt may only be a coincidence that the Bay of Plenty Jockey Club, whioh has been so favoured, races at Tauranga, which is in the electorate represented by the Hon, W, H- Hemes, Minister of Railways.”
