Practically every muniei- j parity in tho country has been engaged I in war profiteering ,in order to recoup • themselves for war expenditure. Gov- 1 eminent should have made good this expenditure, but has'other things to do with tho money, so the municipalities have been selling food stuffs to maintain workers at exhorbita.nt prices This made the municipal balance sheets j tolerable. Many Councils took the op- j port unity to help their friends, particularly their own exployeos, w r ho were given full rations of milk, potatoes and I bread, while tho public were semi-starv- : ed. Tho “Vorwaerts” states foodstuffs wore often sold at 500 per cent, above the Government maximum price.
