GALE AT WELLINGTON

FATALITY IN HARBOUR,.

[per press association.— copyright.] WELLINGTON. Dec. 17. A southerly gale yesterday swept the City and raised the sea' in tho harbour, that caused trouble among boating and vachtinc parties. In one Instance the result was fatal. Petty-officer Frederick Sandalls of the naval service, a.nd Seaman Percival Carey left their ship in a small boat going in the direction of Ngft hauranga were struck by a sudden squall and the boat capsized, while trying to tack against the gale. The men hung on to the upturned boat, for a while and then Sandalls suggested he should swim ashore, having drifted near the beach. Sandalls struck out and aid ed by a youth, Phillip Hunt, who gallantly swam out, reached shore, but succumbed. Meanwhile Carey drifted ashore on the boat.

A party of yachtsmen in a sixteen footer were caught in a squall while jibbing near lvaraka and .it went on its beam ends. The crew of four were rescued with some difficulty by a party returning from a fishing trip. Two other boating parties, one at Lour.v Bay and another off Ward Island * had ’ exciting experiences as the result of being capsized, but air concerned escaped with a wetting.
