CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.

The Canterbury Education Board met on Friday at Christchurch. Present —-Messrs C. Opie (ch airman Y, T. AY. Adams, *J- M&zc, G. W. Armitage, J. Jamieson, C. S. Howard, H. J. Bignell, J.. Peverill, W. A, Banks, E. H. Andrews, J. G ri.mmond and W. M. Hamilton.

On the motion of the chairman, a resolution was carried expressing sympathy, with the relatives of the late Lieutenant A. Talbot, formerly one of the Board's teachers.

The following appointments were recommended by the Appointments Committee :—Hannaton, Mrs G. Port, sewing mistress; Little River. Miss I. Cochrane, assistant mistress; Makikihi, Mrs Marlow, sewing mistress ; Medbury, Miss B. A. Barrel!, mistress ; Mt Grey Downs, M iss P. G arrey, mistress; Training College, Mr R. H. Cutler, assistant master; WaikaG, Atiss I). Hodges, mistress ; AVaimatc D. Mr A. Bain, headmaster; Wharenui, Miss J. R. Hay, assistant mistress. The Committee had confirmed the following appointments : Fair ton, Miss H. S. Bannerman, assistant mistress; Ivoiterangi, Miss E. Millner, mistress ; Timaunga, Miss P. Greer, mistress ; Springbnrn, Mr W. J. Cartwri.ht, master.

A number of applications for leave of absence had been granted. The following resignations had been l'eceived and accepted: Hokitika D.H.S., Miss E. C. Casey, assistant mistress (secondary department) ; Rolleston Miss D. H. Wright, mistress ; Rnapuna, Mr A’. Muller, master ; Southbrook, Miss J. M’Lean, assistant mistress ; Spreydon, Miss F. Pilliet, assistant mistress ; Waltham, Mr A. Gammon and Miss D. Grenfell, pupil teachers; Ohoka, Mr G. Gilling, master. The report was adopted.

It was decided that the householder's’ meetings for the election of School Committees be held on April 22nd, 191 S.

The Board decided to recommend School Committees to commence the Christmas holidays on Thursday, December 20.

In connection with the old Greenstone school building the Department suggested that the Board purchase the material in the old buildiings, instead of selling them. It was resolved that the Board offer the Department £2O for the material to he obtained from the buildings mentioned. The Committee at Hokitika asked the Board to fence part of the boundary of the school gronn*ds. It was resolved that the Foreman report on the application. Inspector Valentine recommended that, if a central site could not be obtained from Messrs Molloy Bros, a new school should be erected on the reserve at .lack’s Mill, arid the present. Kotnku (Aratika) school be repaired.— Resolved that application hd made to the Department for a grant for the erection of a school on the school reserve at Jack’s Mill.

The Tourist Department wrote granting permission to use a room in the tea-house at Lake Kanieri for school purposes, but asked that rent be paid.—Resolved that the leasing of the room be left in the band of Mr Grimmond to arrange, that a copy of the Minister’s letter regarding a school site be sent to the Chief Surveyor at Hokitika, and that he be asked if he can obtain a site. It was resolved that the contractor for Camerons school be written to and informed that the Board will enforce the penalty for non-completion of school in time allewed.

An additional £4 10/ was authorised to complete the drainage of the school grounds at Hokitika. In connection with Upper Kokatahi School it was resolved the Foreman arrange tor repairs to boys’ outhouses. Painting of buildings to be held over.

Lower Kokatahi —Foreman to attend to repairs to fence, and it is recommended that he use the root iron elsewhere aud replace it with ordinary wire. Hokitika D.H.S.—A letter was received asking the Board to make application for a gi-ant to erect a woodwork room, laundry room, and tool shed. It was resolved that the Foreman be asked to prepare a sketch plan and give an estimate of the cost, for the purpose of sending an application on to the Department.
