.Mr. T. Fitzsimmons has been advised that liis son Henry who was reported wounded a few days’ ago has had his right leg amputated. Tt has been ascertained that Sir John Denniston intends to retire from tho Supremo Court Bench at the end of the law vacation. The West Coast Bowling Association’s annual tournament will bo hold at Hokitika next month. The programme* which will he similar to that held at .Reel'ton early this year will be circulated next week. The tournament will extend over three days. On Saturday afternoon next on the local Bowling Green a match will take place between the members of the Caledonian Society and tip* rest of the Club. Last; year tin* fixture proved a very enjoyable one. The Scotchmen ’will .have Flie-ir ranks considerably strengthened this year. An Ashburton resident, who has just returnee} from the West Coast, states that good progress is being made with the tunnel at the Otira. The engineer informed him that only about 28 chains of the. hill still remained to he pierced. The boring operations are being conducted in two drives one being overbead. The programme to be. followed with Tip-up has riot been definitely decided, but it possible, in place of racing during tin* holidays, that he will he given a spell. The All Red gelding lias had a busy time during the last few months, and his trainer Is of opinion that he would be all the better for a rest.
