Patrons of the concert and ball at the Kanieri Public Hall on Friday night will be delighted with the excellent programme to be submitted. The scholars will give a decidedly interesting display and "’ill he assisted by leading amateurs.
Sir George Clifford has , s old the three-year-old Claverhouse, by Antagonist— Scottish Star, to the West Coast sportsman, Mr. P. Donnellan, in whose colours* ho will race at the Greymouth meeting. Claverhouse has shown himself, a smart galloper on the training tracks, though his racing form is moderate.
A capital programme was given at Princess Theatre last evening. The star feature was ‘'The Whip,” a very fine showing introducing some very pretty animal pictures and country life, while a very realistic train smash was introduced. Features of a' grand show in progress and a stirring racecourse scene wore also of great interest.

A northern contemporary says: In spite of the inclement weather the Empire Theatre was well filled on Tuesday everting at tlio third concert at Hutt Valley Orchestral Society which proved a great sueess in every "*D Mr. C. M. Moore quite won the hearts of his audience by his apt rendering of the song “Friend of Mine” Wilfred Sanderson) and he was recalled. The appearance of Mr. Charles Moore was the signal for applause, and the a udience were so plesed with liis “Kash mire song’’ that he was twice recalled He was in fine voice and did full justice to his songs. Mr. W. C. Moore is engaged to sing at the New Years night concert by the (Caledonian Society.
An unrehearsed incident, recalling that of the opening day two years when the punt at the end of the skidway overturned and launched several esteemed citizens, fully clothed into the Buffer R.'iver, for an unexpected emersion, occurred on Saturday afternoon during the ceremonies connected with the opening of the 1917-18 boating season. A “flattie” was in use for odds and ends of jobs, and while Mr. Tom Atchison, captain of the Club was fixing the pillow ropes on the greasy boom the boat turned over, giving its three occupants a good ducking. The captain clothed oven to boots and a straw hat, bobbed up serenely with his hat undisplaced, and, amid the merriment of the onlookers was leisurely hauled on to the skid wav. An. attendant, unable to swim, clung, to the overturned craft until bystanders rendered him similar good service.

The ladies of the Overseas Club are desired to assemble a half an hour earlier than the time fixed for the annual meeting to-morrow night in order to co-operate with the Bed Cross ladies in arranging to conduct the refreshment room at the Caledonian SP orts on New Year’s Day in aid of patriotic services. Mr. Jack Patterson, shipmaster for the Welington Patent Slip Co., has passed for active service (says the “New Zealand Times.” Mr. Patterson had both legs broken about a couple of years ago, and he has a steel plate screwed to the home of his riglitleg., That limb causes lameness * whenever Mr. Patetrson does much walking. The medical officer however, Informed him that he was the fittest man he had passed that day. News has been received of the death this morning of Mr Michael Fraher. a member of the well known South Beach (Greyinouth) family. The deceased, who was a native of South Beach, and about 44 years of age, wap a single man, and had been in poor health for some time. He leaves <> mother, two unmarried sisters and two brothers —Bov. Father Frailer and Mr "Richard Fraher, a member of,the staff of the Bank of New Zealand, who was for some stationed at Hokitika and Kumara.
It lias bee n determined to close the public offices throughout New Zealand for the Christmas holidays from the evening of Friday, December 21st, till the morning of Thursday, January 3rd. This course has been decided upon by the Government- after consultation with the Public Service Commissioners, because tHe pressure in the State departments, arising from so large a proportion of the staffs being absent at time that it is absolutely certain that ordinary leave will have to be very severely restricted during the coming year. ,
The Bank of New Zealand is about to issue ten-shilling notes of a new design. The new note is printed in light pink and dark blue. It has 4h° bank’s name in old English lettering in -a straight line across its. upper half and the vignettes of New Zealand scenery, with Maoris and kiwis in the foregronud, on each side. These are features common to all the lower denominations of notes issued by the Bank of New Zealand. On the back there is an elaborate design, in vollow-ish-brown ink. The pink notes of the present issue will not be immediately withdrawn from circulation. They will be re-issued until, by wear, they have become unfit for further circulation. The new note s are a marked improvement on the old ones. The Westland Acclimatisation Society held its monthly meeting last evening. An application for the use of the Tourist cottage at Hake Kanieri for school purposes was referred to the Tourist Department. The North Canterbury Society asked for support, to a proposal to permit the use of cylinders for duck shooting under certain conditions —Approved. The Marino Depart mont thanked the Society for information supplied in respect to sea-run trout .and their habits. The Department: supplied copies of a regulation prohibiting spearing eels at night by torchlight. The caretaker at the Hatchery recommended liberating two ponds of trout fry—Approved, fish to be placed in Kanieri river. Supplies for repairs to the Hatchery were approved, and other routine matters dealt with. An account for releasing the launch, again in commission, was referred to the President, and Secretary. It was reported illicit deer shooting at Kokatahi and alleged dynamiting of fish at Koiterangi had been notified, and the police were inquiring, ft was also stated there had 'been illicit pheasant shooting in the same locality, and that the police were prosecuting in the case of alleged duck-shooting in the Totara district. Members expressed the opinion that all oases of suspicion should lie sifted to the fullest extent otherwise there would he no protection for imported or native game. An offer to destroy a, shag rookery near Lake Kanieri was accepted.
