The defection of Roumania from the Allied side wall not have come as a surprise. The cable new s prepared us for the event, which might be said to be “by arrangement.” Roumania is a victim of circumstances created by the treachery of Russia. Roumania stood isolated and alone. It is not unlikely when the full story is known that Roumania was betrayed and tricked into entering the war by Russia, as a prey for German spoilation. Germany and Austria and even Bulgaria have taken their toll, and surrounded hv foes with the one friendly power in which she trusted her honor now out of the war, Roumania has had to submit to the inevitable. The fate of Roumania was probably determined at the recent Allied Conference. Words of good cheer and encouragement have been extended to Roumania by the Allies in advance including a clear and definite promise from the President of the United States to see justice down to Roumania now and hereafter. For the time being Roumania will be at the mercy of the enemy. How they deal with the little nation remains to be seen, but ns they do to others they will be done by. Knowing the fate that is before them, they may see in the Roumanian situation a chance to rehabilitate themselves to some small extent- in the nWld's estimation. It is a chance to demonstrate whether humanity, is not entirelv dead in their breasts, and the hope of ultimate reward might fan into a flame the last remaining spark to show thov are not cgrogiously had altogether. The entry of Roumania into the war was considered a milestone on the long road to victory. Perhaps the exit of the country so shamefully deceived by Russia may be a real signpost on the great highway the Allies yet have to tread. But forever, through all history, the criminal act of Russia in deceiving loyal friends will he the blackest page of all.
