NEW THEATRE TAX AT HOME.
The increased entertainmenttnxes imposed by the last Budget and affecting theatres, music-halls, and picture-houses in Great Britain came into operation 011 October Ist. Iu theatres and music-halls the taxon 6d seats is increased from id to ed, on is seats from 2d to 3d, and so on, the 5s seat tax now being 9d as against 3d,'and the tax 011 the 39s box being increased from 2s to 4s.
In picture houses the tax 011 3d seats is id, and 0116 d seats 2d, while seats between 5s and 7s 6d. now ccst an additional is. The tax on complimentary seats has been abandoned. The old taxes were estimated to yield in 'a full year about Over was the actual revenue raised in 1916-17. The Treasury expected to get an additional from the new taxes.
There are over 4,000 picturehouses in the kingdom. In London (County Council area) there are 230 picture-houses. The theatres number 30, and the music-halls 52. The picture-house is to be found in the most remote and isolated districts. In Cornwall, with the exception of three towns, it is the only form ot entertainment to be had. There are 12 picture-houses and only one theatre in the Isle of Wight.
