[PIiR TRESO ASSOCIATION. —COPYBIOHT.j “BLACKLEG” IN CATTLE. AUCKLAND, This Day. The seriousness of the cattle disease ki(ow‘n ias- “.black(eg” was emphasised by Air. Solwvn .Mays at the Police Court, when a farmer, Leslie J. Hancock, of Pukokohe, wa s charged with having, on August It, exposed for sale, >in a blackleg-infected area, a calf not inoculated against the disease. Air. Mays said the prosecution was the first of a series about to be brought before the Court. Five informations affecting ‘2OO head of cattle, had already been laid. Blackleg was one of the. most serious of the diseases peculiar to eat tie, and the whole object of the regulation enforcing inoculation was to prevent its spread. At one, time it had greatly affected the Taranaki district, but it had been effectually stamped out tlirough settlers observing the regulation. Tremepdous' mischief might ensue, as the result of transferring cattle from an .infected area to an uninfected tarea.. The Legislature had recognised this by providing for a penalty up to £2OO. Farmers had no excuse, as officers, of the fttock Department inoculated cattle free or charge. A fine of £5 and costs was imposed. MINING RETURNS. REEFTON Dec. 4th. The crushing returns for the month of November from the Consolidated group of mines are as follows: Progress—Crushed 1650 tons, value £2895, working expenses £1835, development £517. Bla'ckwater —Crushed 2722 tons, value £5488, working expenses £3199, capital £2.3, development £l9O. Wealth—Crushed 1435 tons, value £1486, working expenses £1490, development £445.
