LOSS OF THE APAPA.

X LINER SUNK. 70 LIVES LOST. LONDON December 4. The Elder Dempster liner Apapa has been sunk and seventy lives lost. TWICE TORPEDOED. (Received this day at 12.30 a.m.) LONDON December 5. The Apapa was^torpedoed outside a British port. While the women and children were being taken into boats a second torpedo sank the ship. Nearly a hundred were lost 1; 210 were landed, many being hospitalled.

FURTHER PARTICULARS. (Received This Dav at 10.16. a.m.) LONDON, Dec. 5. The Apapa carried 120 passengers and 100 of a crew, also mails. She was tcxrpedjoed when Ineiaiting Tiome, and commenced to sink directly the torpedo struck. There were enough lifebuoys to save all, but the submarine, seeing the womkn and children embarking, fired a second torpedo, in order to sink the Apapa faster. Over eighty, perished. About .120 landed at west coast ports, after , groat suffering. It is rumoured that the submarine fired on the women and children in open boats. The drowned apparently include (Mr Townsend, Attorney-General for the Gold Coast, and other well know n West African officials. ' Replying to a question in the Lords, Lord Lytton\ denied the naval escort was withdrawn when the Apapa was nearing , the critical zone. It wa s undesirable to publish the arrangements for the protection of shipping.
