The Defender left Wellington this morning, and is expected here to-mor-row night. After discharging her cargo she loads timber for Wellington. On Tuesday about one o’clock a thunderstorm passed through the district. Alen working at Rimu got drenched by a downpour that lasted only a few minutes. There was a stretch about half a mile wide at Kokatahi visited by the. downpour and further north in the Araihura district and towards Goldsborough heavy rain fell for a Oil a narrow strip. Brunner and Reefton also experienced a downpour. At Hokitika -there was an entire absence ot any rain. A meeting of the local branch of the New Zealand Labour Party was held last evening in the Supreme Hall. Several members of the Greymoutli branch were present, and delivered short addresses, explaining the objects and aims of the Party, and also giving some useful .information concerning the ■working of a branch. Reports received of the meetings held i n Rimu and Ruatapu were of a very encouraging nature, some forty members having joined the Party in both these places. It was decided to invite Air P. C. Webb, AI.P for Grey, to deliver an address on the political aspect of Labour, at a date to be arranged. Committees will be formed in Duatapu and Rimu to work their respective districts, and delegates will he appointed to the central committee, Air Fred Newman was appointed to the Committee with pow or to enrol members in the Kanieri district. Some forty new members were enrolled in the hall. An executive of twelve and the following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr. AV. Warren; vice-president, Air W. Logue; sec. and treas., Mr R. Duncraft. Complimentary votes to the visitors and the chair terminated the meeting. A Xmas Tree and Sale of Work will be Held in St. Andrew’s Hall on Wednesday Dee. 19th, when there will be many useful and fancy articles to tempt patrons - with. Proceeds will be in aid of the Methodist Church and admission will he free.
On the Bowling Green last evening in a challenge game for the Dominion Ferns, Bruce and Thompson defeated Keown and Benjamin by 26 to 13. This evening a challenge game for the Morton Feathers will be played the holders, Mr. Stevenson’s rink being challenged by a team of hankers.
