Particulars of the outrage perpetrated at Waiongona (Taranaki) last week, l,v which the dairy machine of a farmer named Hine was wrecked, show that apparently two charges were laid but on]v one exploded. Fuses were laid through the cowshed to the engineroom,. one charge being placed under the engine, driven by benzine, and set on a concrete block, whilst the other charge was placed under the vacuum pump, but this latter did not go off. The engine was completely out of action, and will be useless, whilst the force of the explosion caused the walls to Imloe, and lifted the loft of the J building a little. Apparently the m--1 tention of those who laid the charge was that the explosion would lire the benzine and destroy the shed, which !was a large one; but. fortunately, the j benzine tank was not damaged, and that part of the scheme was frustrated. The “Taranaki Herald” states that there have been several previous instances of explosive* being used in other parts of Taranaki ai night-time to annoy settlers out of spite, particularly along the Coast.
