FRENCH OPERATIONS

A Trench communique states Unit enemy aeroplanes bombed Dunkirk killing three and injuring ten people. They also incidentally bombed a hospital ‘at Zuydcoote, killing seven and wounding nine of the hospital staff.

General Haig reports the Canadians and British delivered this morning an attack over a mile front, astride of Passchendaele—West Roosehek road. Heavv rain commenced before the attack, and continued all day long. Despite the weather we further progress ed northwards along the main ridge, taking a number of prisoners. On the the right of the attack, the Canadians continued to advance along the crest of the main ridge of the north and gained their objectives early. The British on the left attacked along the western . shoulder of the main i idge 'and overcame obstacles. Marshy ground in the neighbourhood of Peddebek stream were reached and the objective beyond. Heavy counter attacks developed biter during the morning against the ground gained by the British, the enemy regaining, after fierce obstinate fighting, some of our advanced positions. Tho West Yorkshires raided northward of Lens. Prisoners were cnotured after hand to hand fighting. Many casualties were inflicted on the enemy Low flving aeroplanes attacked the enemy’s infantry and transport. Three tons of bombs were dropped on billf^ 1 - and aerodromes with good results. We brought down six enemy machines and two of ours are missing.
