A fire occurred at Thompson and Co’s ‘eOYdial factory late on Saturday night, and did damage to the extent of betwen £7OOO and £IO,OOO. The fi re started in the bottling department and much damage was done to the machinery, belting etc., but two brigades extinguished the fire, before the central portion of the premises were demolished. The insurances are spread over six companies, the Guardian covering the largest amount. OBITUARY. TIMAiRU, November 5. Captain James Tait, who has boon Harbourmaster at Timaru since 1909, and previously from 1897, was master of the Harbour Board’s dredges, died on Sunday afternoon, following a paralytic stroke on Wednesday nighf aged 60. He was a native of ghetlands and followed the sea all his life. Ho wa s master in the Union Co’s employ before taking a harbour appointment at Timaru. He was a kindly man, and well liked by all. He leaves a widow, four sons and two daughters.
ELLIOT EPISODE! SEQUEL. BISHOP OLEARY’S WARNING. AUCKLAND November 5. Replying to the hostile propagand directed against the Roman Catholic Church, Bishop Cleary said the effect of such a campaign must ho to divide and weaken the Dominion hv permeating dissension among its people. “1 warn the Government,” he declared “that we are not going to suffer such attacks lying down. If there is not in this Dominion a Government strong enough or patriotic enough to abate this dangerous propaganda of dissension and strife in and out of our army, we ourselves will see to our proper defence.
NOAURUHOE IN ERUPTION. A COLOSSAL OUTBURST. AUCKLAND, Nov. sth. The outburst from Ngauruhoe on Saturday night and. all day Sunday and to-day were felt like earth-quakes here, accompanied by noise like the bombing of a distant cannon. On Sunday and to-day numbers of people ascended the bills at Taumarunui and saw spectacular outbursts from the volcano cone, the volumes of smoke rising rapidly and geyser like to a great height, 'fhe vibration was such that windows rattled. The activity displayed by Ngauruhoe since October 20th became greatly intensified during the week end. From nine on Saturday evening’ till three on Sunday afternoon the volcano was continuously in eruption. A gigantic explosion occurred at 10.40 p.m. on Saturday, stones . being, thrown to a great height, while a vast quantity of lava flowed down the mountain side. The lava, overflowed Ihe crater again at midnight. The volcano was comparatively quiet to-day. _

In the Supreme Court No Bill was found in the case of Percy Withers charged with manslaughter. Tlie charge arose out of a motor icar accident in- Wellington wherein a child was run over and killed. DR. TRUDY KING. DUNEDIN, Nov. 5. Dr. Truby King has received cabled advice from Lord Plunkett, advising that the financial arrangement’s proposed by Dr. King have been approved and that the Committee propose to obtain hospital accommodation for mothers in the outskirts of London, to he worked on Karitane lines; also that the Marlborough sehool of Mothereraft for educating women engaged in welfare work will he at the Doctor’s disposal, and that the Mother Welcome Club for demonstrating purposes in a poor district in London will he established before the Doctor’s arrival. Dr. King expects to leave the Do- , minion at the end of the year or early in tho New Year.
