ON THE WESTERN FRONT.
HAIG’S REPORT. LONDON November 5. Marshal Haig reports: The London Territorials made a successful laid eastward of Gavrelle taking prisoners and machine guns. ■ The enemy under cover of bombardment made a raid south-eastward of Kpehy. We repulsed the raiders northward of Jolygon Wootß There is considerable mutual artil-ory-ing. Hostile artillery is more active in the Nieuport sector.
GREAT ANZAC CHARGE. A GLORIOUS DAY. (Received this day at 12.30 a.m.) LONDON, November 5. Mr. Massey concludes —The Australians formed up against the eastern trenches and .fixed bayonets charging in line after line, went for the enemy. Before the last wave reached the enemy the German machine gunners were siient telling a tale of enemy dead. Dismounting at the first line of trenches the Anzacs went on afoot overpowering the Turks. Then bringing forward! their chargers, .they galloped, cheering into the town. There was every evidence that the Turks were completely surprised. A train ~ was standing in the station and the warehouses were full of com almost intact.
Tho 31st. was a great day for the Palestine Army. The Staff work was admirable and the morale of the troops never higher. A FRENCH REPORT. (Received this day at 1.20 a.m.,) WASHINGTON, Nov. 5. The French High Commission points out that Anglo-French attacks arc compelling Germany to transport more troops to the West Front, and will probably restrict tbe aid which she is able to extend to Austria on the Italian Front, until tho situation there is. relieved. \ AN AMERICAN OPINION. (■Received. This Dav at 8.50 a.m.) WASHINGTON, Nov. 5. Mr Baker emphasised the fact that the principal hat-tic front remains in Flanders and France. There, he said, our forces are fighting.
