DISTRICT RACING COMMITTEE.
MEETING AT GR-EYMOUTH
The District Racing Committee met a’t Grey mouth last night. Present:— Messrs M. Hannan (chair) McMahon (Reefton). Bignell, Kettle, Coates, Petrie. Smith Evans (Hokitika), Walton and Fogarty (Secretary). The programme of the Takaka Racing Club for a meeting in February, stakes about £B7 was approved and passed.
The programme of the Westland Racing Club for January 8 and 9th stakes "£I,OOO wa s approved and passed., The Reefton Jockey Club submitted alternative programmes for £l,lOO and £I.OOO the former containing fpur trotting races. If the Trotting Association passed the trotting events that programme would be acceptable to the Club. Failing that, the second programme would be more acceptable. Tho meeting was to be held on 26th. and 27th. December. The matter of passing, the programme was left with the Chairman to deal with after le’arning the decision regarding the trotting events. It was pointed out that Westport Trotting Club would be holding >a totalisator meeting on the 26 th. Deeembclr.
The Chairman' reported that the Gre.vmouth Club’s programme commitee had met that aftenoon and resolved unanimously not to include any trotting races iu the programme as recommended by the general committee For this reason the matter of compiling the programme would he referred back to the general committee to sit later that evening. The (passing of the programme was left in the hands of the members of the Grey month Club A Jockey’s and Trainer’s license was granted to O. Wa'sley of Hokitika.. Correspondence was l’ead from G. B. Murfitt in respect to the sale of the horse Emvorth which it appeared had been disposed of 'without regard to the contingent conditions of a lease from the original owner of the horse. It was resolved to refer the corres- : pondence and explanation to the Secretary of the Racing Conference. The request of F. Langstone for the removal l of his disqualification was considered. This rider had been disqualification hv the Hokitika Club forstriking anotherjjockey at the conclusion of a race «nd a term of three years imposed, nearly two years of which had now run. Subsequently the Racing Conference imposed a term of six months as a penalty for Langstone appearing on a race course while disqualified. The Westland Racing 'Club in view of Langstone joining the Defence forces and' obtaining a good character from the Camp Commandant, recommended the removal of the disqualifica-
Mr. Petrie moved that the removal he recommended to the Conierence, the meeting recognising Langstone’s act in volunteering for military service and maintaining a good character as worthy of appreciation. Mr. McMahon seconded the motion.
In the discussion which followed, members expressed the opinion thiat Langstono. should not he licensed to ride again. The Chairman pointed out that the Racing Conference having imposed a subseauent term of disqualification, this meeting could not deal with that term. He suggested that Langstone be notified to apply to the Racing Conference in the first instance and if that appeal were successful, this Committee could again consider the matter. This suggestion was adopted, and Mr. Petrie’s motion was withdrawn.
'Hie meeting concluded after a' short discussion on the amusorhent tax and other formal .matters.
A meeting of the Greymonth Jockey Club was held subsequently when the report from the Programme Committee was received.
After discussion it was resolved to adiourn till Thursday nigho, the Programme Committee to prepare alternate programmes for-three days racing at New Year, one programme for eight, events a day to total £2,000 and another for seven events a day to total £1,700.
