GREYMOUTH, This Bay. ; A young man named Pfaff was convicted and fined £5 under the War Regulations for issuing letters intending to 'interfere with the proper trading of oversea vessels. . The letters were found in the possession of two seamen who were arrested and convicted of desertion. The notes were given as recommending the seamen to. persons in the Reefton district for employment. The note stated that the seamen were leaving and ran away from a ship, a ship publicly stated to be “black,” and connected with the Australian strike. The Defence stated there was no intention of doing a wrongful act, but j that the letters were given in good faith. That the seamen had been legitimately discharged. In the case of Palmer who was sentenced to one month for boarding an oversea vessel by justices, was reheard.
