MILITARY SERVICE BOARD.
MONDAY, October 29th
The Court sat-at the Magistrate’s Court Hokitika at 30 a.in.. Present Messrs J. S. Evans, S.AI. (Chairman), J. Milton and E. R. Sludliolme.
Captain Pilkington, military representative and Air. Duncan Secretary, were also present.
The following appeals wore dealt with
John Henry Burrowes of Hokitika, Classed A, (Mr. Wells).— Appellant stated he was 20 years of age, had father and mother, four brothers and five sisters. Was a miner on wages. One brother went with the 17ths. His earnings yore the only ones given into the home at Kanieri. William H. Burrowes, father of appellant stated his son wa's keeping the home at Ivaniori. His business expenses at present prevented him assist-
The Court adjourned decision till next sitting. John Henry A. Died rich, South Westland (Mr. Murdoch) Classed A.— Held up by floods.
Michael 'William Devatiey Hokitika Class C-l. Adjourned to next sitting.
Ernest Phillip Hatch, Ross, Classed A.—Appellant asked for an extension of time to enable his employer to find a substitute. Allowed till January draft.' William Edward Foster, 311. Hercules, classed A. (Mr. Sellers) —Statement handed ill stated he was 35 years of ap;e, and had four brothers, two serving. Was married with two children. Was coacli driving between Boss and Spilth Westland. Would be milking 1(5 to 20 cows for Inter-Wanganui Dairy Coy. The question of the adjourned appeal of Jolin.P. Hanslniry and Thomas Foster, adjourned sine die was taken with above.
The Chairman stated the Hoard considered an arrangement was possible to reduce the number of eligibles in the two lines of coaches. Mr. Murdoch outlined an offer made by'TTansbury and Foster’s reply tliere-
Tho Board adjourned both appeals to next sitting to see if Hanslniry and Foster could come to some decision. If that was not done then the Hoard would themselves make the decision.
David Mulholland, Upper KokatnTii Classed C.l. (31 r. Murdoch) stated ho was single. His father and mother were dependent on him. Had two brothers both of military age. Both wore unfit. •
Bernard .Mulholland father of appellant, also gave evidence.—Adjourned sine die.
James David McKay of .Ross (Classed C. l (Mr Park)—Appellant stated he wa’s 31 years, married. Mother was living, partly dependent on him. Had two brothers, one at front, one on fi months leave. Had 250 acres, used for grazing.—Adjourned sine die conditional on his milking for file factory. - William John O’Reilly, Upper Kokatnlii. Classed A. (Mr. Murdoch).— Statement of position handed in. Had one brother ( a priest) over age. Was milking 35 cows for factory for season. —Adjourned sine die. James Christian Heiule, Hondo’s Kerry, (Mr. Park) Classed 0.1, deposed the. statement handed an was a correct one. After considerable enquiry the Court stated that having, several brothers who had been turned down they considered this was a case for the man to go to camp. The appeal would be dismissed, appellant to go with the Jan nary draft. 'William Joseph Tronc.V; -Kumara, Classed C. 1. (Mr. Murdoch). —Mrs. Troiicy gave evidence that she bad 7 sons and six daughters. Two sons are .under military age. Two sons are serving. Adjourned sine tlie. Robert Henry Ford, Kumara and also B. Wade <m behalf of Kurd (ill’. .Sellers) Classed A. ; Appeal dismissed, 4o go in January lira ft, appellant. stating this time would meet his requirements. J. Alnrtyn on-behalf ■of Allred Thomas Mavtyn Kumara, Classed A. .Mrs Martyo gave evidence that she had six sons and four daughters. - The son she was appealing for was the next to the eldest who had enlisted a year ago. Her sou was a general carrier.' 'Jho next son was lb. , Alfred -Mnrtyn, Classed A. also gave evidence, as to his father’s inability to carry on the work.
The Chairman said there was a large family and hotel property in Kumara was not worth much, but ho thought' he ought to go. Appeal would be dismissed. and allowed till January draft. P. Gunn on behalf of Alexander Gunn, Wntaroa (Mr. Murdoch) Classed A. Alex’Gunn handed in a statement. His brother milked lb cows last year. Had not commenced milking tliis year awaiting the result of appeal. One brother C 2 was to come up lor reexamination. He was the only other brother at. home. The Chairman said the family record was good. Adjourned to next sitting to await what happens to brother. Tf left the family will have to do tjioir best in milking. Tlie Court then adjourned at 1 p.m.

Clarence E. Atkinson, Arahura Road Classed A. (Mr. Park) A statement was handed in. Appellant, stated he and bis sisters did the milking. Worked his whole time on the farm, except when lie worked for his brother-in-law when lie w;r s short of a man. His sisters deliver the milk. He. looked after the farm work. Annie, Atkinson, sister of appellant, stated they could not do without their brother. Pearl At-
kinsoii corroborated tlie evidence of her sister. The Chairman stated tlie girls appear •ed to be doing most of the work. A man appeared to be essential. Adjourned lor report, but every effort would have to be made to put in crops. Patrick Win. Toker of Arahura, Classed A, (Mr. Joyce.) Statement handed.in and sworn to. Adjourned sine die. John McCormick (Air. Murdoch for Thomas J. McCormick, Upper Kokatahi. Classed JA.—John Ale Cormiek gave evidence, also Thomas AlcCor-Corinick.—-Appeal upheld. Clarence F. Mansliip, Herepo, Class<,(t A. (ATr. Murdoch) —Appellant stated lie was 25 years of age, single. Have three brothers all serving was at present milking 53 cows.-—Adjourned sine die.

Alexander Sutherland, Boss, Classed •Y.ll—Appellant stated he was 3b years. Had one brother, who had boon rejects ed. Four sisters. Witness volunteered 12 months ago, hut, was rejected. He wanted time to lix up his affairs. Throe months would suffice. Appeal dismissed ; to leave in February draft.
Edward Woolhouse, appotil ion behalf of Henry 'Turner jWoolhouso, Kokatahi, Classed A.—Appellant stated lie had four sons, two of military ago, and one son was killed at the Somme. Five daughters, single. He wa s asking for three months extension. Allowed till February draft:
Vincent- Howard Stopforth, Hokitika Classed A. (Air. Alurdoch) —'Phis was a case up for review. 'Pile report of the Efficiency Board stated that this was not a case of hardship.
Thomas Stopforth, father, gave evidence that his statements given two months ago still held good. His son was an urgent, necessity to his business. R. 0. Speed, dredgemaster gave evidence in support.
The Chairman said the appeal would bo dismissed, appellant to go by the January draft.
