DEEDS OF DARING.

BATTLE HONOURS. Particulars of deeds which won special honour for New Zealand officers recentlj’ have just come to hand by mail. They include : DISTINGUISHED SESVICE ORDER. Lieut-Colonel Alfred WinterEvatis, Infantry, showed the greatest coolness and energy during an attack and the subsequent consolidation of the captured position, “ inspiring all ranks by his magnificent personal example, and never sparing himself to make the operation of his battalion the success which it. was. His work at all times has been of the same high standard.” MILITARY CROSS. Second Lieutenant Rex Clifford Abernethy, Rifle Brigade.—“He showed great ability and resource in commanding his company when all the other officers had been wounded, consolidating the captured position and maintaining the new line. His ready grasp of the situation inspired all ranks with the greatest confidence.” Captain Cuthbert William Free, 2nd Battalion Canterbury Infantry Regiment—“ During our attack upon a village he led his company with the greatest skill and coolness under heavy shell fire. He moved calmly about the barrage encouraging his men, with complete disregard of his personal safety. He personally assisted to capture two machine-guns, and he set a splendid example of courage during, the whole action.” • >

Lieutenant Frank George Massey, Rifle Brigade—“ Previous to an attack he performed valuable service to his brigade in successfully carrying out its assembly arrangements. The fact that there was no hitch was due to his careful personal reconnaissances. Afterwards, during the attack, he did valuable work in going forward when communication had broken down owing to casualties and other confusion, and returning with a clear report upon the general situation.” FRENCH WAR CROSS. By the last mail from London news was received that the General Commanding the French First Army has conferred the Croix de Guerre upon Brigadier-General H. T. Fulton, C.M.G., D.S.O. (Gurkha Rifles, attd. N.Z.R.8.) ; LieutenantColonel W. S. Austin, D.S.O. (Greymouth).
