AN AUSTRALIAN SWINDLE.
SENSATION IN LONDON. SYDNEY, Oct. 25
Advices from London state a sensation has been caused in commercial circles, by the discovery of a big flour swindle in Australia.
It appears a syndicate opened negotiations with a reputable Capetown firm, for the disposal of flour valued at £35,000 sterling, and the transaction was completed for cash against bills of lading which were duly presented and the buyers drawn upon, a largo proportion being negotiated in Australia.
It was afterwards discoverd that the cargo did not exist and that the bills of lading were clever forgeries. As a sequel, Bruce Bride Kirk, described as Manager and Proprietor of the General Agency and Trading Company, and Ferdinard Henry, a master mariner, have been arrested in Sydney and remanded on charges of conspiring to defraud the London Bank of Australia of large sums by means of alleged false bills of lading, which represented shipped goocls to South Africa, brought by the Atlas Shipping Coy, the latter company being non-existent.
