General Haig reports that the enemy lastfllpight affo'atcked oltxr portions at Houtliulst Wood, at the junction of the. Anglo-French armies, but tvas completely repulsed. Since Monday the enemy lias delivered seven counter attacks, not achiev*mg material results at any point. The Gloucesters successfully raided south-west of Gavrell OFFICIAL NEWS. WELLINGTON, This Day. The High Commissioner reports from ’ London 23rd of Oct. at 10 a.m., as follows— British dfficia,! .reports state there has been highly successful minor operations by our troops in the neighbourhood of Poelcappolle and in conjunction with the French, south of Houthulst Fort. There was severe fighting hut the southern defences of Houtliulst Fort have been captured with a further series of fortified farms and other strong points.
The Allied troops established themselves firmly well beyond the southern boundary of\ the forts.

A French communique says the night I « was calm. The enemy bombarded our £ new lines especially in the region of < • Vnndesson. We are organising our gains hitherto. We have prisoncred eight thousand v including a hundred and sixty officers belonging to eight different divisions. It is confirmed that two enemy divisions, placed in reserve behind tho front, participated in yesterday’s fighting, and were severely handled. A violent attack northeast of Hill 344 on the right of the Meuse, was repelled. After a desperate fight, the enemy obtained a footing in our ad vanced line, but were driven out, and our line entirely restored. « A German attempt upon Camieres crest, failed with heavy loss. j '\r ' —* !
