THE DANNEVIRKE FIRE.
A. SCENE OF • DEVASTATION. [per PRESS ASSOCIATION. —COPYRIGHT.] DANNEVIRKE. October 23. Dannevirke is busy to-dav contemplating the scene of yesterday’s dissitrolls blaze. The debris burned all night, but the Brigade confined it Lo the area over which the flames had ravenously swept, and despite a gale there was no further spread. Nothing remains oh what was yesterday morning the centre of the town, hut bare brick walls and tottering chimneys, twisted galvanised iron and charred sticks. A track was cut right through the centre of tile town, on the whole area devastated, comprising about two to three acres. Steps tire being taken hy the Mayor, Chairman of Dannevirke County Council, Th'csicleitt ot the Chamber of Commerce -'uul Mr. 0. Hunter, M.L’. to organise relief for the sufferers. A special appeal is being made to old Dannevirke residents throughout the country to. rally round the .sufferers.
Most of the representatives of Insurance companies met on the scene ‘>l disaster.
Three pilferers of salvage appeared in Court to-day. Two wore lined £IH each and one £5. in dciault lourteen days imprisonment.
