HOLDING THE GAINS. (Received This Dav at 12.25. •> LONDON Oct. 23. General Haig, reoprts the enemy attacked on our no"' posts on the southern part of Houthulst Wood, and forced us back a short distance. Wo maintained and consolidated our gains on the remainder of the front. Rain fell during the night, and the weather is stormy and unsettled.
A FRENCH ADVANCE. MANY PRISONERS TAKEN. (Received This Day at noon.) LONDON October 23. A French communique says mtillery preparation for several days, we attacked at 5.15. this morning, powerful German organisations in the region of Allemeoifl Malmaison. We coniderably progressed along the entire front of attack. We took many pri-c?i»ers.
