WEST COAST DEPUTATIONS

WELLINGTON, October 20
A County deputation in regard to the timber royalties met the Premier (Hon. W. F. Massey) this morning. Mr. iJ. C-olvin member for Puller, introduced the deputation consisting of Messrs O’Regan (Lnangahua), Hannan (Grey), and Murdoch (Westland), who ; strongly urged the Government to treat the bodies claims both from legal and equitable standpoints. After a patient hearing the Premier stated that the Crown Law officers had advised that the counties had no legal claim.
The deputation the a asked that the Government consent to the legal question being decided by the Supreme Court by means of an originating summons or other inexpensive procedure. Tlie Premier replied that he recognised that,the counties had a moral claim and promised to meet the deputation again next. Wednesday. lit the meantime, he would confer with the of the Department, to whom he would refer the whole of the documents prepared by the deputation setting forth the counties’ claims. It is expected that at the next interview the Hon. W. D. S. MacDonald, Minister of Mines,, and Dr Salniond, Solicitor-General, will be. present.
